Barbara Owen
Art Bio
Barbara
took her first art lesson at 53 years of age and found
she could actually paint a tree to look like a tree.
Reggie Powell encouraged her to take drawing lessons and
Terrance Corbin was her next teacher. Children in
action became her favorite subject and soft pastels her
favorite medium.
Pastel
workshops with Betty Dortch Russell, Carol Katchen,
Reggie Powell, Degas Pastel Society of New
Orleans and many others have been the basis of
her art education. Lots of practice with copying
old masters’ works and help from fellow artists at the
Pine Bluff Art League has been invaluable.
Barbara’s
paintings have been accepted in juried and non-juried
shows around Arkansas
and twice in the Pastel Society of Southwest in Dallas,
Texas. In 1988 the Italian version of “The
Artist” magazine sponsored a contest about soccer when
the World Soccer Tournament was in Milan,
Italy. Her painting of a grandson kicking a ball
was accepted and shown in Milan. In 2002 she
received “Best of Show” at the Pine Buff Art League
exhibit at the Southeast Arkansas Arts and Science
Center. Barbara's artworks in various media hang
in Trinity Village, Lakeside United Methodist Church, and many homes and offices.
Her
painting is a hobby and her greatest pleasure is
fulfilling requests by her children, grandchildren and
close friends. Barbara states that to have a
college student tell her that she has the painting that
she did for her birth hanging in her apartment, and that
she treasurers it, is “as good as it gets.”
