Rose Herring
Art Bio
While
Rose was growing up in Orange
County California, she was fortunate to have the
opportunity of having art offered as one of her
subjects. She has always loved to draw and paint.
She began drawing at an early age. In grade school
she sketched around the margin of all her assignments.
You could say that was her “signature.” She
got into trouble many times in high school sketching
instead of doing her assignments
Rose
didn’t really pursue her art until late in life.
She started drawing her pets and family members.
From there she got into portrait painting in pastels and
then in oils. Her technique is realism. She
uses photographs as her references. When working
in pastels she uses very few hard pastels. When
she needs details, she uses the sharp edge of a soft
pastel. The eyes of her subject excites, Rose, so
she likes to get them in as soon as possible. She
saves the lightest light for highlights. She says
that the kneaded eraser is her “best friend” in
pastel painting. She used it quite often to make
smooth areas, darken dark areas and many other uses.
What Rose likes most about pastels is that they are so
VIBRANT.
When
working in oils, she first does her paintings in sepia,
and then works her color into the painting. She
uses Liquin as her medium.
Rose
has done some landscapes and nature paintings, but at
this point, in time she is focusing her talent on still
lifes and abstracts.
